Application Of The Freeze Mark

"The Alpha-Angle Horse Identification System"

If you have purchased a horse who has a freeze mark, or your contact information has changed, please get in touch with us so we can update your horses file.

When having your horses identified, be sure the technician is legitimate.  Ask for their photo ID and check our Website to be sure they are listed.

Want a job working with horses and traveling?  We have openings for technicians!

Applying the Freeze Mark

The technique is a simple one, and completely painless to the horse.  A place on the neck is shaved and washed with alcohol and the iron that has been chilled in liquid nitrogen is applied to the neck.  For the best results it is advisable to have the horse sedated, as we never know how it will react to the cold iron.

The hair on the site will grow back white with a little balding in the center of the symbols.  On light colored horses the iron is applied longer so each symbol will have more balding.  The hair will not grow back in the bald areas.  However, with the winter coat, or at any time it may be hard to read, we suggest that the owner keep the mark clipped.  Freeze marked white hair will grow longer than the normal hair.
