Each letter of the alphabet was developed to be unalterable, where it could not be changed from one letter to another, such as a P to an R. Each Alpha symbol could be rotated into one of eight positions. An Alpha symbols is assigned to each state and to qualifying breed associations who request a position. The first symbol used in the freeze mark will be the assigned Alpha symbol. Horses registered with breed association that has an assigned Alpha symbol will have that symbol applied. Grade horses, horses registered with other breed associations will have the state symbol applied. Since each horse within a particular breed or state will have a different registration number or assigned number, no two horses will have the same freeze mark. This makes positive identification possible for the horse's lifetime.
